Corey Deuel – Corteza advances to Predator Last 16

Corey Deuel –  MANILA, Philippines – Reigning national champion Lee Van “The Slayer” Corteza moved closer to winning the coveted the Predator World Tour title after he barged into the Round of 16. Corteza defeated David Alcoberro of Spain, 8-7, in the Round of 32 at the Lloret de Mar in Girona, Spain over the weekend. The 2009 World Ten Ball finalist earlier beat Jose Luis Gonzales of Spain, 8-5. With the victory, Corteza earned free airfare and lodging in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the tournament will be continued. The organizing committee decided to stage the Last 16 in Rio because of the heavy snow in Spain. “Kaya na-reset, sa Brazil ang continuation ng Predator World Tour, the venue was under an outdoor tent (no side panels) which partly collapsed due to heavy snow early morning [of the] second day,” said Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines secretary-general Boying Santos Viola. Negros Billiards Stable (NBS) head coach Christopher Palses, meantime, said in a long distance interview: “We (NBS) are very happy for the latest triumph of Van-Van (Corteza) for making it to the Last 16 in Predator World Tour.” While Corteza continued his winning ways, his compatriot, Jeffrey “The Bull” de Luna, bowed out on Saturday. De Luna lost to Rodney “The Rocket” Morris of the United States, 7-8. He earlier lost to to Neils “The Terminator” Feijen of the Netherlands, 5-8. Joining Corteza, Feijen and Morris in the Rio de Janeiro Last 16 set this summer 2010 are Corey Deuel (USA), Marcus Chamat (Sweden), Thorsten Hohmann (Germany), Henrique Correia (Portugal), Aziz Hamrah (Afghanistan), Johnny Archer (USA), Ernesto Dominguez (Mexico), David Alcaide (Spain), Huidji See (Netherlands), Oliver Ortmann (Germany), Tony Crosby (USA), Steve Moore (USA) and Charlie Williams (USA), in order of bracket placement. The total purse worth 50,000 euros is up for grabs with the champion getting the top prize of 10,000 euros. The runner-up will receive 6,000 euros. – by Marlon Bernardino
